College Hill 20 Year Reunion

Making Black History

College Hill was a groundbreaking reality TV show that premiered on BET on January 28, 2004. It was the first Reality TV Show to follow the lives of an all-black cast of students attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). The novel and historic journey began with the filming of the Premier Season on Southern University’s campus in Baton Rouge, LA. The show was a huge success, running for eight seasons with two spin-off seasons, and currently airing College Hill – The Celebrity Edition. College Hill has been praised for its positive representation of black culture and its realistic portrayal of the HBCU college life experiences.

The College Hill series broke down barriers and stereotypes. It was the first reality TV show to feature an all-black cast and predominantly black cast each following season, giving viewers a glimpse into the lives of students attending HBCUs. The series was a favorable depiction of college life and it helped to increase the visibility of those institutions featured in the series alongside the cast. College Hill displayed vibrant campuses, exciting student life, and the vastly unique cultures of these Universities. In the early 2000s, when College Hill was first filmed, Historically Black Colleges and Universities faced declining enrollment and financial challenges. Additionally, racial tension was surging in the United States. College Hill helped to put HBCUs back on the map, and it inspired a new generation of black students to attend these institutions. It also ushered in a new era of pride for black culture and gave rise to authentic discussions about the educational disparities around the country.

The show’s positive portrayal of black students helped to challenge negative stereotypes and promote understanding and tolerance for social differences. College Hill was one of the first shows to represent black students in a realistic and nuanced way by showing the challenges and triumphs of college life for black students. Most importantly, it inspired the demand for admirable black media and the cultural celebrations of nobility flourishing within today’s black communities, fondly referred to as “Black Excellence.”

In honor of the history and the efforts to showcase the HBCU Experience, Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston, Tx proclaimed September 15, 2023 as College Hill Series Day.
